Leicestershire, Lincolnshire (near Gainsborough), Sussex, and West
Yorkshire, are named with Old English leac ‘leek’ +
tun ‘enclosure’. The compound was also used in the extended
sense of a herb garden and later of a kitchen garden. Laughton near
Folkingham in Lincolnshire, however, was probably named as
loc-tun ‘enclosed farm’ (see
